Village of Bridgeport at Lake Sumter residents pack meeting to make plea about speed bumps

Residents from the Village of Bridgeport at Lake Sumter packed the Community Development District 5 meeting room Friday morning pleading with supervisors to keep a pair of speed bumps in place.

Last month, Community Development District 6 supervisors voted to remove the pair of speed bumps at the entrance to the Village of Bridgeport at Lake Sumter. However, it was later discovered that the section of multi-modal path belongs to CDD 5, not CDD 6.

Patricia Schneck, who has lived in the Village of Bridgeport at Lake Sumter for 12 years,  gathered 153 signatures on a petition imploring the supervisors to leave the speed bumps in place.

She admitted the speed bumps are an inconvenience.

“I put a cushion on the seat of my golf cart for when I go over the speed bump. I deal with it,” she said.

Gary Fenton of the Village of Bridgeport at Lake Sumter, who is also a Villages Homeowners Association representative, gave a presentation on behalf of the residents.

He detailed line-of-sight issues that have created a dangerous situation.

He also said those driving cars in and out of Village of Bridgeport at Lake Sumter are frequently subjected to verbal abuse, or worse.

Fenton urged CDD 5 supervisors to work with their counterparts in CDD 6, who have responsibility for the gate issue.

“We are in this together,” Fenton said.

CDD 5 Supervisor Gary Kadow appeared before the CDD 6 board asking supervisors to agree to a joint meeting which would also include a representative from Kimley-Horn & Associates Inc., the District’s engineer. Peter Moeller, a CDD 6 supervisor and the Project Wide Advisory Committee chair, will represent PWAC at the yet unscheduled meeting.

“We will come up with a win-win situation,” CDD 6 Chairman Walter Martin assured the audience.

CDD 6 Chair Sally Moss said the safety of the residents is the greatest concern.

District Manager Janet Tutt said PWAC will be asked to get a full engineering study at the location. PWAC will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the District Office at Lake Sumter Landing.
