A Village of Belvedere man was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence after he was spotted driving a golf cart on County Road 466.

A Sumter County sheriff’s deputy spotted the golf cart at 6:42 p.m. Wednesday and initiated a traffic stop at Jennings Citrus at the corner of County Road 466 and U.S. 301.

Shawn Patrick Maloney, 40, who lists an address on Ascott Loop in The Villages, told the deputy he was new to the area and got lost when he was looking for Wal-Mart.

Maloney provided the deputy with an Ohio identification card and admitted that his license had been suspended for a previous DUI. It appeared Maloney had been drinking.

He failed field sobriety exercises and refused to provide a breath sample.

The golf cart was towed from the scene. While searching Maloney’s backpack, the deputy discovered three cartons of Merlot wine. Two of the cartons were empty and one was full.

Maloney had been convicted of impaired driving in 2013 in Columbus, Ohio and in 2015 in Westerville, Ohio.

He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $5,000 bond.
