Sumter County deputies involved in shooting after woman reports man punched her dog

Two Sumter County sheriff’s deputies were involved in a shooting at a home just outside The Villages on Friday night.

The sheriff’s office received a call at about 6:20 p.m. about a domestic disturbance at a house on NE 105th Lane. Deputies met a woman at a nearby church off Cherry Lake Road who told them that a man had punched her dog in the face three times. She said an argument ensued, the man pushed her and she fled the home with her children before contacting law enforcement.

While the deputies were interviewing the woman, they heard gunshots nearby, so they responded to the area. A short time later, they confronted the man, who refused to comply with their commands. The man eventually raised his firearm at deputies and two of them fired shots that struck him, the report says, adding that the man was trauma alerted to Ocala Regional Medical Center.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. No further details were available Friday night.
