Sen. Alan Hays, who represents The Villages, has prefiled to run for supervisor of elections in Lake County.

The Umatilla Republican, if elected, would succeed the long-serving Emogene Stegall in the supervisor of elections office.

Last year, Hays had applied for the president’s job at Lake-Sumter State College, but failed to make the early cut.

The 69-year-old Hays has served in the state Senate since 2010. The supervisor of elections job pays $116,661.
