Soil borings could provide clues to erosion problem at Morse bridge embankment

Soil borings are being taken at the islands that support the bridge on Morse Boulevard over Lake Sumter.

The work began Thursday morning and will continue through Friday. The soil borings are being collected under the direction of Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., the District’s engineering firm.

Equipment had to be brought in Thursday morning which prompted a brief closure of the bridge’s golf cart lanes. On Friday,  the outside northbound lane of automobile traffic will be closed all day while the drilling on the east side of the island takes place. It is anticipated the lane closure will begin in the morning and last for approximately six to eight hours.

The borings are part of a $75,000 study being done by Kimley-Horn examining erosion on the islands that support the bridge.

The man-made islands on which the bridge sits are owned by the District. The bridge and the asphalt belong to Sumter County.

Any repairs will be funded by the Project Wide Advisory Committee which represents Community Development Districts 5 through 10.
