Sinkhole shuts down portion of busy intersection in The Villages

A small sinkhole opened up Saturday morning at the corner of County Road 466 and County Road 101 in The Villages.
The hole, which is located at the corner of the intersection in the northbound lane near a storm drain, forced officials to close a portion of the roadway at the entrance to the Village of Summerhill just west of the Southern Trace Plaza and across from The Villages High School.

A sinkhole opened up Saturday morning at the intersection of county roads 466 and 101.

While the initial hole looks small, the depression under it is somewhat bigger. A road crew marked the entire depression with white lines Saturday morning and Community Watch personnel were on hand to make sure no one drove over the hole or walked on top of it.

White lines show the entire area of the sinkhole at the corner of county roads 466 and 101.

It’s unclear how long it will take crews to repair the sinkhole, but the pavement on top of the area has to be cut away and the hole will be filled in with the proper materials once they figure out what caused the problem.

The intersection also serves as a main thoroughfare for New Covenant United Methodist Church and it is not known how this might impact Sunday morning traffic.

Sinkholes have presented numerous problems in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown over the past years, with the most visible being on McLawren Terrace in the Village of Calumet Grove, where two homes have been deemed unlivable. That neighborhood is still dealing with the issue and homeowners are fearful of their property values dropping.
