‘It’s a save’ proclaims geologist on site of scary sinkhole in Villages

Crews worked through the night pumping a mix of sand and concrete into the sinkhole.

Crews working through the night have saved two homes threatened by a looming sinkhole on Chalmer Terrace in the Village of Buttonwood.

“It’s a save,” said lead geologist on the project Drew Glasbrenner.

He is senior geologist and vice president of production for Bracken Engineering of Tampa.

His client was the insurance company of one of the two homeowners.

Crews pumped a mixture of sand and cement into the massive sinkhole.

He explained that the sinkhole began as a minor event back in January.

Work had been ongoing at the site and Glasbrenner had believed that the project was almost finished.

But then there was a “cover collapse” and crews came in and ratcheted up their work in hurry-up, two-minute drill fashion. Cover collapse is the abrupt collapse of the ground cover, Glasbrenner said.

He received the call notifying him of the cover collapse at 10 a.m. Saturday. He has been at the site since that call came in.

Glasbrenner is the father of children ages 4 and 1. They had been eagerly anticipating an Easter Egg hunt.

“My wife hid eggs in the house last night. This morning, I watched the kids hunt for those eggs on my phone,” he said.

However, he said he was thankful to see this Easter miracle of sorts for the homeowners involved.

A worst-case scenario would have called for the homes to be condemned, he said.

Community Watch was on the scene this morning, discouraging onlookers from going to the site. Villages Public Safety has been on site since Saturday.
