Nervous neighbors watch as new sinkholes open up

Nervous neighbors have been watching as new sinkholes have opened in their backyards in the Village of Belle Aire.

The first sinkholes were discovered at dawn on Friday at Glenview Championship Golf Course.

Crews came out and filled them with dirt.

On Tuesday morning, new sinkholes were discovered, according to residents of Richmond Drive whose homes back up to the golf course.

At 3 p.m. Tuesday, a resident reported another new sinkhole had opened. As of Tuesday afternoon, there were a total of eight sinkholes, according to residents.

That portion of the golf course remains closed. The golf course is operating with only the Stirrup Cup Nine until Thursday.

A sinkhole was discovered Saturday morning by the front door of a 77-year-old woman’s home in the Village of Liberty Park.

An elderly couple got out of their car before it was swallowed up by a sinkhole over the weekend at a Checker’s restaurant in Ocala.

This part of Florida is particularly susceptible to the formation of sinkholes after long periods of drought followed by heavy rain.
