A man who told police he had been drinking at the square in The Villages, was arrested after a crash at the Jeffrey Gate.

Lady Lake police were called May 25 to the Jeffrey Gate on the Historic Side of The Villages where the driver of a gold Saturn told an officer that he had been rear-ended by a truck.

It appeared the truck’s driver, 58-year-old Lawrence Paul Muhlbauer Jr. of Weirsdale, had been drinking, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department. He admitted he had been drinking at a square in The Villages, the report indicated.

Muhlbauer refused to perform field sobriety exercises.

He had two dogs in the truck with him and officers asked Muhlbauer if he had someone who could pick up the dogs. He originally said his wife could, but then told police his wife was in Hawaii. The dogs were turned over to Lady Lake Animal Control.

He later provided breath samples that registered .317 and .303 blood alcohol content.

He was booked at the Lake County Jail on a charge of driving under the influence. Bond was set at $1,000.
