A 31-year-old woman residing in the Village of De La Vista West told law enforcement she stole money out of the cash drawer at Kohl’s because she was afraid of losing her home.

Amanda Carroll Burgess of 483 Hildalgo Drive is free on $2,000 bond following her arrest Friday afternoon on a charge of fraud.

Burgess had been working as a cashier at Kohl’s when she allegedly took $150 from the store’s cash register between Oct. 2 and Nov. 19. She took the money in increments of $10, $20 and $50, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department. She is also accused of taking $64.17 in store merchandise.

When questioned by police, Burgess said she knew what she was doing, but is on the verge of losing her house to bankruptcy and needed food so she decided to take the money.

Burgess had been arrested in 2014 after a disturbance at the Village of De La Vista West home. Those charges were later dropped.

Sumter County Court records indicate the home, owned by Burgess’ mother, will be the subject of a foreclosure sale on Jan. 28.
