High-tech license plate recognition is coming to gates in The Villages.
The Amenity Authority Committee on Wednesday morning took the first step to bringing the technology to Florida’s Friendliest Hometown. The ACC voted unanimously to spend $283,837.44 in the first phase of the project.
Video cameras are already in place at the gates. But the license plate recognition software will be of great benefit to law enforcement.
Under the current system, detectives and Community Watch sit for hours, or even days, reviewing video when something has occurred, such as a crime or a missing person.
“Time lost is critical,” said Lady Lake Police Chief McKinstry. “Recovery time, if someone goes missing, will definitely go down. A computer can do in seconds, what people will take hours to do.”
The AAC is not paying the freight alone. Other Community Development Districts and the Developer will share in the Villages-wide project.
“This technology is really cool,” said AAC member Carl Bell.
