District official indicates excess water will be pumped out of Lake Sumter in wake of Hurricane Irma

It is going to take a month to pump down Lake Sumter which has been brimming over ever since Hurricane Irma.

The excess water in Lake Sumter will be pumped into retention ponds in Community Development District 5, according to Sam Wartinbee of District Property Management. Those ponds have been intentionally lowered through irrigation in preparation of transferring the water from Lake Sumter.

The excess water has been causing headaches including the flooding of the tunnel under Morse Boulevard at Mariposa Way, near the bridge over Lake Sumter. The tunnel has experienced flooding in recent weeks due to the abnormally high level of the lake.

The tunnel at Mariposa Way and Morse Boulevard was flooded earlier this month.
