Once Wildwood’s largest planned development, the Landstone-Wright project has been abandoned.
Plans for 8,000 homes on 4,000 acres south of County Road 470, not far from the Coleman federal prison, were proposed in 2008. Later, permits were extended to 2021 and the property was sold to Wildwood Ranch.
Cattle soon will graze on the property now owned by the Buffalo Hide & Cattle Co.Â
The Wildwood City Commission Monday night rescinded the planned development and agreements with the developer. Zoning for a development of regional impact will be changed to agriculture.
The Landstone-Wright project was one of several major residential developments proposed in Wildwood in 2008. Another was Wildwood Springs, where 3,000 homes were planned and which now is the Village of Fenney.
These projects were delayed by the recession and the housing market downturn.
Plans for the Landstone-Wright development were superseded this year by The Villages plans for the villages of Fenney and Southern Oaks on the other side of CR 470. The Villages plans to build up to 11,000 homes on 4,500 acres on both sides of the Florida Turnpike.
Wildwood commissioners also approved a monitoring well for the Landstone-Wright property. City Manager Jason McHugh said the well was requested by the Southwest Florida Water Management District.
