Speed signs have apparently become increasingly popular in The Villages.

Lady Lake recently started using portable speed signs. You can read more about that HERE.

They have received such an enthusiastic reception that the Lady Lake Commission has agreed to look at the possibility of buying more of them.

“People love them. They are asking for them,” said Town Manager Kris Kollgaard.

The requests are being heard elsewhere in The Villages.

Community Development District 3 Supervisor Gail Lazenby is encouraging his fellow supervisors to purchase a speed sign.

“I think this is a positive appropriation for us to make,” he said.

Lazenby, who spent his career in public safety including several years with the Villages Public Safety Department, has been researching speed signs. He has recommended that CDD 3 purchase a solar-powered model that would run about $3,200.

In addition to making drivers more aware of the speed at which they are traveling, the devices also collect information about drivers’ behavior. That information can be useful to law enforcement.

CDD 3 has temporarily put the purchase on hold pending consultation with Sumter County which owns the speed limit signs on which the speed sign would be mounted.
