U.S. Rep. Rich Nugent found himself moving barricades for World War II soldiers on the first day of the government shutdown.
A World War II Honor Flight was visiting the capitol but would have been unable to see the World War II Memorial.
Nugent, a Republican who represents most of the Villages, and another colleague heard about the dilemma, hustled to the scene and moved barricades so the veterans could visit the memorial.
“The WWII Memorial is an open-air place. It’s open to the public day and night. It was literally going to cost more to put up barricades then to simply leave it open,” Nugent said.
The veterans got a standing ovation, he added.
“It’s the one bright spot in an otherwise pretty sorry situation,” he said.
