Community Watch driver assists in arrest of intoxicated golf cart driver found in roundabout

Raymond Francis Callahan Jr.

A Community Watch driver assisted in the arrest of an apparently intoxicated golf cart driver early Saturday morning at Lake Sumter Landing.

The Community Watch driver contacted the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at 12:51 a.m. after spotting the man who appeared to be “intoxicated and unsure of his location,” in the golf cart in the roundabout with automobile traffic at Stillwater Trail and Morse Boulevard, according to the arrest report. The Community Watch driver had the golf cart follow the Community Watch vehicle to a relatively safer location at Canal Street and Old Camp Road.

The golf cart driver was identified as 41-year-old Raymond Francis Callahan Jr. of Raeford, N.C.

During field sobriety exercises, Callahan complained he had a bad right foot which required special orthopedic insoles for his tennis shoes,” according to the arrest report. He was allowed to remove his shoes before attempting the exercises, but he still performed poorly.

When Callahan was transported to the Sumter County Detention Center, he became belligerent and refused to provide a breath sample.

He was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence and booked at the jail. He was released after posting $1,000 bond.
