A “No Parking” sign that had been requested for Neptune Drive in the Village of St. James was denied Tuesday evening by the Sumter County Commission.
Village of St. James resident Sal Torname asked the commissioners for the sign.
He said that Neptune is a busy street because of its intersection with St. Charles Place and its close proximity to the St. James gate.
Torname, who is also a supervisor with Community Development District 8, said golfers at the Sandhill golf course have taken to parking their vehicles on Neptune Drive while they golf.
Irritated residents living on Neptune Drive have resorted to calling Community Watch who in turn called the Sumter County
Sheriff’s Office. There have been cases of vehicles being towed away.
Torname presented a petition signed by 100 residents of the area.
Commissioners were, however, cool to the idea of signage.
“I am generally for less signs. We have so many signs, people become numb to those things,” said Commissioner Doug Gilpin.
Commissioner Don Burgess questioned how a “No Parking” sign could differentiate between homeowners, visitors, golfers and contractors such as landscaping companies.
County Administrator Bradley Arnold said it remains a law enforcement issue.
