A high-energy Vacation Bible School is wrapping up this week at New Covenant United Methodist Church in The Villages.
This year’s theme, “Kingdom Rock,” has led 140 children through Epic Bible Adventures, science projects, singing and a healthy dose of spiritual messages.
The fifth annual program has been fueled by 70 volunteers — 95 percent of whom are Villagers.
Villagers Judy McIntyre, Carolyn Hernandez and Danielle Meo were obviously enjoying themselves as they took children through the Epic Bible Adventure of Jesus resurrection.
“This is such a rewarding experience. The children are so eager to learn,” said McIntyre of the Village of Tamarind Grove.
The program started at New Covenant five years ago with 35 children.
“Children expect so much more these days. It’s not like the old days of arts and crafts,” said New Covenant’s Coordinator of Children and Family Ministry Kristyne Young. This year’s theme, “Kingdom Rocks,” kept children moving and inspired.
In addition to the children and the adult volunteers, numerous Villages High School students volunteer in the program.
“It’s great to take the children through the lessons and do the musical numbers with them,” said VHS student Emily Graham. “It is very inspiring to see them learn and grow.”
The church will soon be offering a first-ever children’s basketball camp put on by Villagers Mel and Jenny Sweat. The camp will run from July 22 to July 26. The deadline to apply for the camp is July 14.
