Community Development District 5 supervisors on Friday agreed to remove the rumble strips at the Belvedere Boulevard tunnel.
The tunnel is currently closed for stack block repairs. The closure is expected to last two more weeks.
Tunnel B9 is located beneath County Road 466, just east of Belvedere Boulevard. At either end of the tunnel, sets of three white rumble strips have been installed. Kimley-Horn & Associates Inc. observed traffic operations at this location and concluded the rumble strips are not serving any purpose.
“Rumble strips are generally used to warn drivers of an upcoming obstacle or change in traffic pattern. At this location, the tunnel approaches are nearly in line with the tunnel itself,” the Kimley-Horn report said.
Supervisors agreed with the engineering firm’s assessment.
“It serves no purpose. It doesn’t slow anybody down,” said CDD 5 Chairman Walter Martin.
Sam Wartinbee of District Property Management said the time to make the change is now.
“Because the tunnel is closed, this would be the time to do the work,” Wartinbee said.
The rumble strips will be ground down.
