Anonymous tip leads deputies, FBI to dog-fighting operation in Sumter County

An anonymous tip which led to a three-month investigation, culminated in the arrest of a man believed to have run a long-time dog-fighting operation in Sumter County.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office in a joint operation with the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation executed a search warrant Wednesday at the residence of 65-year-old Patrick Wayne Riley located at 5104 W County Road 48 in Bushnell. The investigation revealed Riley had been breeding and training game fighting dogs dating back to 1975.

Riley’s residence contained evidence of him violating the “Animal Fighting Act” by possessing dogs, equipment and documentation detailing his involvement, including attendance, and hosting of illegal game dog fighting events. Deputies also found medical supplies, steroids, and antibiotics along with training devices. Riley admitted to hosting at least one fight at his home. Sumter County Animal Control took custody of eight Pitbull Terriers.

During the execution of the search warrant, deputies discovered 19.7 grams of methamphetamine, approximately 2.62 pounds of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and controlled substances; identified as morphine sulfate pills, cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride pills, hydrocodone pills, oxycodone pills, Xanax pills, and ecstasy. Also located at the residence were several firearms, including shotguns, rifles, and handguns of various calibers.

Riley was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $60,000.

Also arrested in the operation was 27-year-old Tosha Marie McClenaghan of Lake Panasoffkee on charges of possession of methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. She was booked on $4,000 bond.
