The first car to be towed under Sumter County’s new parking ordinance was removed from the St. Simons Villas in the Village of Belle Aire.
The car, owned by a dead man, had become an irritant in the villas.
Community Development District 3 Supervisor Gail Lazenby, who has championed the removal of the car, went to Tuesday’s meeting of the Sumter County Commission where the ordinance was up for a vote. At the meeting, Lazenby sat next to Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Villages District Commander Robert Siemer. Once the commission passed the ordinance, Siemer made a call about having the vehicle towed out of the St. Simons Villas.
“The next morning, Lt. Siemer was out at 7 a.m. to see that car being towed away,” Lazenby told fellow CDD 3 supervisors at Friday morning’s meeting.
“That car had been in that parking spot, in the villa for two years,” he added.
He encouraged fellow supervisors to be on the look out for other parking abuses in which the ordinance could be useful.
