The Amenity Authority Committee has concluded that increased staffing by Community Watch can handle backups at the Del Mar Gate.
The AAC had been considering adding lanes of traffic to the gate near Spanish Springs Town Square.
The most-recent estimates put the possible expansion of the gate at upwards of $111,000. But even nearby residents said they thought that the cost was too high.
“That’s way too expensive,” said Judy Glasel of Chula Vista Villas.
A recent Villages-News.com poll showed that 47 percent of respondents indicated that Community Watch was the answer. Another 11 percent advised the AAC to leave the gate alone. Only 35 percent said they would like to see the AAC move ahead with the Del Mar Gate expansion.
Division Chief of Community Watch Bill Elliott said it’s obvious that peak times occur during monthly Cruise Ins, events like Tuesday’s Italian Parade and shows at the Sharon L. Morse Performing Arts Center.
The expansion of the gate would have included the construction of a restroom for personnel manning the gate.
