Two killed in accident on Interstate 75 south of Ocala

Two people from Long Key were killed when an International tractor trailer truck struck their 2010 GMC Sierra at 9:23 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 75 south of Ocala.

Killed in the accident were 53-year-old Kenneth Lee Cohan and 63-year-old Jay Anna Cohan.

James  Philip Handley, 68, of Orlando had been driving the tractor trailer truck north on I-75 when it blew a tire and he lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle crossed the median, crashed through a guardrail and collided with the GMC Sierra which had been southbound, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The tractor trailer truck landed upside down with its cab removed.

The Cohans were pronounced dead at the scene.

Handley was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

The accident backed up traffic for five miles, according to reports from witnesses.
