Wildwood commissioners to vote on hiring of city’s next police chief

Randy Parmer

Wildwood commissioners on Monday will vote on the hiring of the city’s next police chief.

Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco Captain Randy Parmer last week accepted an offer to be Wildwood’s next chief, extended to him by City Manager Jason McHugh.

The formal vote on Parmer’s hiring will take place when the commission meets at 7 p.m. Monday at city hall.

Parmer will be paid $80,000 annually and will receive health, dental, vision and life insurance coverage. After six months, his salary will be evaluated.

In 2017, a proposed pay hike that would have brought previous Police Chief Paul Valentino’s salary to $92,000 sparked debate among city commissioners. Valentino, a resident of the Village of Fenney, resigned late last year.

Parmer has had a career of more than 35 years in law enforcement. He served for one year as chief of police in Taos, N.M. He also served for two years as assistant chief/interim chief for the Duval County School Police. He spent the bulk of his law enforcement career – 31 years – in Jacksonville.

He is a graduate of Southern Illinois University.
